The Medical Technologist I in Molecular Pathology or Microbiology performs a variety of tests of a moderately or highly complex nature on patient and quality control samples for pathology procedures. In addition, the MT I may also assist with the instructing of laboratory personnel, pathology residents, and laboratory medical students. 

Perform moderately complex tests by various analyzers in the Laboratory, and/or by manual methods, on various specimen sources, under close supervision:

• PCR Procedures: performs PCR analysis to detect and quantitate RNA and DNA for various viral markers.
• Multiplex PCR Procedures: performs multi-step assay for detection of several respiratory viruses.
• Performs DNA sequencing of the viral pathogen

Perform routine molecular pathology procedures as needed:

• Manual DNA/RNA extractions: completes a variety of manual extractions of DNA and/or RNA from respiratory and non-respiratory samples as needed.
• Automated Extractions: performs extraction of DNA and/or RNA extractions using an automated system; applies knowledge of extraction theory to troubleshoot system.
• Preparation/Storage of reagents: prepares various reagents used for a variety of molecular techniques such as PCR master mix and stores appropriately; apply knowledge of use of various pieces of equipment used in the preparation of reagents.

Receive a wide variety of patient specimens arriving at the laboratory for testing and perform the procedures necessary to prepare specimens for testing or referral to other laboratories as well as follow-up on inappropriate test orders.

Review test results before reporting, using technical and scientific knowledge to recognize and verify results.  Consult with supervisor prior to the release of results when results are unusual or unanticipated.  Notify patients' physician(s) of critical results.

Perform established quality assurance procedures (i.e. quality control testing, instrument function checks and calibrations) and maintain appropriate records for these procedures. Understand the statistics applied to the quality assurance program and review and maintain the records. Use the laboratory information system for all records, functions and inquiries related to testing of patient specimens.

Maintain a neat, orderly and safe working environment in the laboratory while adhering to all guidelines of OHSA's Bloodborne Pathogens Control Act. Perform other duties as assigned.

CREDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED BY PLACEMENT OFFICER
 

• High school graduation or equivalent.
• Meets basic standards and qualifications for laboratory testing personnel under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), Subpart M, Section 493.1489. The CLIA reference can be found at the following website address. This is a direct link:

• Completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences is strongly recommended.
• Must complete training on the daily bench assignments with a staff technologist or supervisor prior to the assignment of any duties described above
• Must have knowledge of correct procedures for handling potentially infectious specimen materials of patient origin so as not to contaminate self, coworkers or the work area.
• Must know the importance of appropriate waste handling and disposal.
• Must understand the applications and purpose of laboratory quality assurance programs and procedures.
• Must be able to identify problems of a technical and/or clinical nature, referring the problem to senior and/or supervisory staff in a timely manner.
• Must be able to maintain productive communication with peers, supervisors, health care staff, and visitors.
• Must understand the function of the medical laboratories in the health care environment.
• Must have knowledge of the importance of the flexibility necessary for work performance within the laboratory setting and the importance of a professional appearance and attitude.
• Must be able to understand and follow the guidelines for prevention of contamination of molecular testing areas.
